Why do you want a website?

Determining why you want a website is a very important step and failing to properly consider this can lead you to getting a website that does not suit your actual needs. For many businesses or for individuals trying to market services or products it's pretty much a given these days that having a website of some kind is important. If you are an artist demonstrating your work or selling your work you would want a different website from a community group setting up a place to share services and information.

What do you need it to do?

Once you figure out why you want a website in the first place you should be able to expand on that to decide what kind of website you require. Do you need to sell anything? Do you need a gallery? Would you need a community driven website with forums and comments? A good first step can be to find a website that already does what you want and figure out what they are doing that makes sense to you.

What is realistic?

If you have little to no money you cannot expect to get a massive complicated site. The more functionality you require on your site the more time and money will be required. But also it's important to be realistic in your expectations for your website. If you build a site that is not properly suited to your business you can create a website full of dead areas that are not used.
